Smaug had four legs no matter what Jackson's crappy movie says.

no, not Smaug, I will complain to all Smaug "artists" he is lion faced, furry cheeks and fur down his spin, missing a scale on his chest, VERY red, cat eared and has an under bite.

The style and colors are charming - but the fierce pose of the dragon makes it dramatic as well. It's a mix that suits the Hobbit I think :)

I never imagined Smaug to be this geese-like, but it's working! Nice work!

There are depictions of dragons with two legs, and even no legs at all! Look at some images of "lindworms" and "wyverns". Anyway, who's to say what a dragon should look like? A dragon is a mythological creature, so one should be free to take their imagination as far as they like when designing one... I mean, I've seen dragons with multiple heads and more than two wings. With such a long history and cultural range, it's not surprising that dragons are so wonderfully diverse! : ]

This is lovely. The droopy claws on the feet, the sinewy tail and neck that almost seem floppy (and that balance each other well), and the insect-like wings are all so charming.

If I were to offer criticism, it would be that the background is a bit distracting. The dragon and gold heap are so detailed and engaging themselves, and flow so well, that having a textured background, or one with a border even, just pulls the eye away or breaks the line. At the same time I realize that clearing the page of all the pencil marks or photoshopping just the dragon onto a blank background could be a major pain.

Also, your color choice for the dragon and the way you did Smaug's details really makes me think of a hard, armored carapace. Which is fantastic.

Thank you for sharing!

I very much like the "free" quality of your linework and the rustic yet regal color palette. Fitting! :)

My one small critique is that there is some visual awkwardness about the golden branch (cloud?), on which Smaug is perched, in the corner where the outline breaks the image border.
Your drawing interrupts the border in 4 other places, but they are all parts of the dragon and are situated in a balanced way along each edge. The color also continues despite the border. But in the lower right, the branch does not follow this pattern. A simple remedy would be to erase those black on the border, or maybe redraw the branch's bottom a little more to the left.
